AHSL had its beginnings in 1995 when five families began meeting monthly at Golden Corral for dinner to
fellowship and plan field trips. Eventually, we began to hold weekly PE classes at New Community Church. The group gradually grew over the next few years under the leadership of Greg and Melanie Owens and added Spanish, Drama, Sign Language, Music, Karate, Sewing, and Art classes. We were able to hold various
workshops, a curriculum fair, and were blessed to use several different church buildings as the group grew larger.
By 2002, AHSL leadership began focusing on the structure of our group. A Coordination Team was established, and a mission statement adopted. This year members began receiving a monthly newsletter and a membership directory for the first time. 4-H clubs began meeting, the Drama Club performed at local nursing homes, and we held our first Christmas party.
By 2004, our first set of bylaws was approved, and we became incorporated – all of which led to AHSL becoming a tax-exempt organization in 2006. In the next few years, the group continued to grow and become more active. Early on, we saw the beginning of Mom’s Night Out (2003), held our first High School Graduation (2004), and our first End-of-Year Picnic (2004). By 2010, we had entered floats in the Christmas parade (winning first place in the non-profit group in 2007); held fall and spring co-ops (now known as Tuesday Enrichment Classes); had a Hunter Safety Team (that placed 18th out of 38 in State competition); Talent Sow; Spelling Bee; Science Fair; and History Fair.
Since 2011, AHSL has seen a significant increase in membership. The Hunter Safety Team grew into their own organization, and co-ops adjusted over the years with the current times (for example, COVID required outdoor classes). With the increase of teens in the group, teen events were planned more regularly. Over the years, we have been thankful for all the churches that have opened their doors to us. We are so blessed to have Corinth Baptist Church support our organization as we currently hold most of our activities there.
