The Albemarle Homeschool Support League (AHSL) is a community of Christian homeschooling families in northeast North Carolina. We offer enrichment activities, social events, and peer support to new and experienced homeschoolers. Our mission is to empower parents in their responsibility to educate their children grounded in the teachings of Jesus Christ.
At AHSL, we proudly offer Tuesday Enrichment Classes (TEC) as part of our vibrant support group for homeschooling families with children aged 4 and older. TEC is designed to enrich the homeschooling experience by fostering a collaborative community where families can connect, share resources, and enhance their educational journeys together.

Kathy’s family moved to the area in 2004, where Karl pastored a small church for twelve years. While they have lived here, AHSL has been a tremendous blessing in their lives as a parent support and as a wonderful friend group for their kids and grandchildren. Kathy has enjoyed teaching a variety of classes in TEC (formerly co-op), leading a sewing club for a few years and serving as a Board member. She currently homeschools four of her grandchildren and enjoys encouraging parents in their homeschool journey.
Kathy and Karl have four grown children and 12 grandchildren! Since their children are spread everywhere from Elizabeth City to Utah to Alaska to Germany, they have many reasons to travel frequently for fun vacations! Kathy continues to serve as the Board chair and looks forward to getting to know more members of our AHSL community.
Since 2006, she has been actively involved in the homeschooling community, dedicating 17 rewarding years to homeschooling her children in Alabama and North Carolina. Now that her children have graduated and moved on to college, her focus has shifted to supporting other families on their homeschool journey.
As the organizer of the Tuesday Enrichment Classes, she creates engaging opportunities for students to explore new interests and develop their skills. In addition, she documents students' milestones through photography and compiles their yearbook to celebrate each school year. She also manages the community's social media accounts to keep everyone informed and connected.
As a board member of AHSL, she is dedicated to empowering the next generation of homeschoolers, believing that by sharing experiences and fostering relationships, they can build a strong support network for all families.

AHSL is very team-oriented, and everyone is needed and appreciated. I'm privileged to serve on the board and play a role in making sure our program continues to be exceptional and maintains its firm foundation on God's Word so that we can keep meeting together, learning, and encouraging one another in Christ.

Her oldest child is currently enrolled in a college nursing program, her middle child is homeschooling and is in high school, and her youngest child is enrolled at a local charter elementary school. The Albemarle Homeschool Support League has been a tremendous support for all three of her children's unique homeschooling journeys. As a parent, she has enjoyed teaching during the Tuesday Enrichment Classes and is now honored to serve on the board as co-secretary. She aims to encourage other homeschooling families on their journeys and continue to provide an engaging, fun learning experience through AHSL.

She has recently joined the AHSL board to help fill the secretary role. Stephanie is a mother of two and has a Senior graduating in Spring 2025. She started homeschooling in 2020 with no experience and immediately fell in love with the flexibility and a more customized learning experience. Watching your child learn or grasp a concept that you taught them is such a big motivator to continue on. Looking forward to coming together and sharing ideas on how we can make the most of our homeschool adventures.
AHSL had its beginnings in 1995 when five families began meeting monthly at Golden Corral for dinner to
fellowship and plan field trips. Eventually, we began to hold weekly PE classes at New Community Church. The group gradually grew over the next few years under the leadership of Greg and Melanie Owens and added Spanish, Drama, Sign Language, Music, Karate, Sewing, and Art classes. We were able to hold various
workshops, a curriculum fair, and were blessed to use several different church buildings as the group grew larger.
By 2002, AHSL leadership began focusing on the structure of our group. A Coordination Team was established, and a mission statement adopted. This year members began receiving a monthly newsletter and a membership directory for the first time. 4-H clubs began meeting, the Drama Club performed at local nursing homes, and we held our first Christmas party.
By 2004, our first set of bylaws was approved, and we became incorporated – all of which led to AHSL becoming a tax-exempt organization in 2006. In the next few years, the group continued to grow and become more active. Early on, we saw the beginning of Mom’s Night Out (2003), held our first High School Graduation (2004), and our first End-of-Year Picnic (2004). By 2010, we had entered floats in the Christmas parade (winning first place in the non-profit group in 2007); held fall and spring co-ops (now known as Tuesday Enrichment Classes); had a Hunter Safety Team (that placed 18th out of 38 in State competition); Talent Sow; Spelling Bee; Science Fair; and History Fair.
Since 2011, AHSL has seen a significant increase in membership. The Hunter Safety Team grew into their own organization, and co-ops adjusted over the years with the current times (for example, COVID required outdoor classes). With the increase of teens in the group, teen events were planned more regularly. Over the years, we have been thankful for all the churches that have opened their doors to us. We are so blessed to have Corinth Baptist Church support our organization as we currently hold most of our activities there.
